Vet-Client-Patient Relationship

The veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) the responsibilities and expectations between veterinarians, their clients (pet owners or caretakers), and the animals under their care.

  • Veterinarian: The professional responsibility lies with the veterinarian who must possess appropriate training, knowledge, and skills to provide medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care for animals.
  • Client: This refers to the pet owner, farmer or rancher who seeks veterinary services for their animal. The client assumes responsibility for authorizing treatment, providing accurate information about the animal's health and behavior, and following the veterinarian's recommendations for care.
  • Patient: The patient is the animal receiving veterinary care. The veterinarian must consider the patient's health and welfare as the primary focus, providing appropriate medical treatment and advice in the best interest of the animal.

Key Elements of the VCPR:

  • Communication: Open and clear communication between the veterinarian and the client is essential. This includes discussing the animal's health, treatment options, risks, and prognosis.
  • Examination: The veterinarian must physically examine the animal to establish a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan. This initial examination is crucial for understanding the animal's health status.
  • Follow-up: The VCPR implies an ongoing relationship where the veterinarian monitors the animal's progress, adjusts treatment as necessary, maintains records on the patient and provides follow-up care.
  • Responsibility and Consent: The client has the responsibility to provide accurate information about the animal and to follow the veterinarian's recommendations. They also provide consent for treatment after understanding the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options.
  • Professional Judgment: The veterinarian uses their professional judgment to recommend appropriate care, ensuring it aligns with current veterinary standards and the best interests of the animal.
